ADHD Evaluation and Treatment
A structured, careful evaluation process for children, adolescents, and adults — followed by an individualized treatment plan and ongoing monitoring.
Children and adolescents
For patients age 5 and older, evaluation includes information from caregivers and, when authorized, from school. We look at how a child functions academically, socially, and at home, and we consider development, sleep, learning difficulties, and emotional health alongside attention symptoms.
- Caregiver interview and developmental history
- Teacher or school input when authorized
- Age-appropriate rating scales when indicated
- Discussion of school supports and accommodations
- Family education and follow-up planning
Adults
Adults are often evaluated after years of difficulty with organization, deadlines, follow-through, or focus. We review childhood history along with current functioning at work, at home, and in relationships, and we consider other conditions that can produce similar symptoms.
- Review of childhood and current symptoms
- Workplace, academic, and daily-life impairment
- Medical and psychiatric history review
- Standardized adult rating scales when appropriate
- Discussion of treatment options and monitoring
The Process
What an ADHD evaluation involves
Evaluation usually takes place over more than one visit so that information can be gathered thoughtfully.
Clinical interview and history
Review of symptoms across settings
Standardized rating scales when appropriate
School or workplace impairment
Differential diagnosis
Medication and nonmedication treatment options
Follow-up and monitoring
An important note about online questionnaires
An online questionnaire alone does not establish an ADHD diagnosis. Questionnaires and rating scales are one part of a comprehensive clinical evaluation performed by a qualified healthcare professional. Treatment recommendations are individualized, and controlled medications are prescribed only when clinically appropriate and consistent with federal and state requirements.
